This is part one of a two part seminar. Dr. Jenny Tucker who works for the United States Department of Agriculture in her role as a carrying volunteer will take you through how to develop a Federal resume and how to submit it through USA Jobs. The federal hiring process is radically different from government contractors and the commercial market.

Working for the Federal government can be a tremendously fulfilling part of a public-service career – if you can get in the door! The Federal government’s hiring process is significantly different from many other sectors, and understanding the process can help increase your opportunities. To achieve this, this session will demystify the Federal hiring process. First, we will discuss how Federal job announcements are created and where they can be found. We’ll also review the sections of a Federal job announcement and their importance, and walk through the stages of the interviewing and hiring process. Finally, we will review the essential elements of a Federal resume, to maximize your ability to pass the initial screening process. To prepare for this session, please visit www.usajobs.gov and search for 1-2 positions that interest you. Bring a copy of those announcements, and a copy of your resume. We will use those for workshop exercises to create an active hands-on session. Speaker Biography

Dr. Jennifer Tucker has more than 25 years of experience working in both the private sector and the Federal government. She currently serves as Associate Deputy Administrator for the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Program. In this position, she has served as the Hiring Manager overseeing the recruiting of many of the positions on the team. Prior to this role, she was an organization development consultant, trainer, and group facilitator serving primarily scientific and technical organizations in public and non-profit sectors. Jenny holds a B.A in Environmental Science, an M.S. in Management, and a Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies. She is the author of the booklet “Introduction to Type and Project Management,” part of the Introduction to Type Series from CPP, Inc, and has been a Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) since 2005. As volunteer activities, she is also the Executive Director of the Non-Profit FOSS Institute (NPFI) and the Secretary and Treasurer of the Reversal Theory Society. She has extensive experience conducting interactive engaging workshops, and regularly teaches resume building and interviewing skills in her own agency.
