Have you wanted to hire technical interns but felt like you didn’t have the money to pay for them? The State of Maryland wants to support you!
The Maryland Technology Internship Program (MTIP) helps the State of Maryland retain top talent by increasing the number of paid technical internships across the region. The program incentivizes technology-based businesses to hire more interns by subsidizing salary costs and providing additional support. It is administered by the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) and funded by the State of Maryland.
Qualified technical businesses can apply for reimbursement of 50 percent of intern salaries of up to $3000 per year. If you were going to pay $10 an hour for an intern, for example, now you can offer $20 an hour and attract a higher caliber student. Or you can still offer $10 and get $5 back. Preference will be given to smaller businesses and employers seeking interns to fill technical and creative roles that require science, technology, engineering or math skills (STEM). Interns are expected to work a minimum of 120 hours per semester. The interns must be current college students attending a Maryland school or college students who reside in Maryland graduating within 12 months and with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Maryland residents from the armed forces may also qualify.
Employers must complete an MTIP Application found here and participate in an online orientation and post internship survey. Reimbursement will occur after the student completes the internship and a survey.
Applications for MTIP funding are accepted on a rolling basis and are reviewed bi-monthly. Applicants receive a notice of approval or denial within 15 days of submission. Contact Christine Routzahn at [email protected].
