Meryl Silver is an accomplished fine art photographer. The medium uncovers for her moods and emotions of the natural world that often go undetected in real time, or are only present for a fleeting moment, or in fact, may not exist in reality at all but are created by our imagination. Her goals are to capture the beautiful effects of light, pattern, reflection, shadow and atmospheric events on the natural landscape and reveal a world that usually goes undetected as we rush through life. Join her at Launch Workplaces for this opening reception for her gallery showing!
Meryl is originally from New York City and now lives in Maryland, right outside D.C. Most of her early work, shooting in black and white film, was documentary, focusing on the people and street scenes in New York City. For example, she did a photo series on Coney Island, where locals ranged from old and grizzled chess players to young working-class parents with their kids. In these projects, she tried to capture the timelessness of the places and the warmth of its inhabitants. Meryl has switched to digital photography and much of her focus has shifted from documentary towards fine art. Fine art photography allows her to capture details of a subject from another perspective. Her pieces have appeared in numerous juried and invited exhibitions. Her series, “Simplicity Within” was described as “reeds drenched in light dance, bow and leap across the stage with the drama of a Kennedy Center performance.” (Prince George’s Sentinel 2/13/14.)
