EVENT OBJECTIVE: Position the Universities at Shady Grove as a convener and thought-leader, increasing access, awareness, and opportunities for entrepreneurs in the region, as Montgomery County continues to evolve as an entrepreneurial hub.

 

6:00-6:30 PM  Focused Speed Networking

Students and recent alumni of programs offered at the Universities at Shady Grove campus are invited to network with a curated group of business leaders and university partners, representing a variety of industries including technology, cyber, bio, hospitality, and more. Students will have the opportunity to pair with academics and entrepreneurs in their related fields for focused networking.

 

6:30-6:50 PM  Panel: Entrepreneurship and the Economy

A panel of entrepreneurs from across the region will share perspective on how higher education and the business community can work together to foster a culture of entrepreneurship in the region. Moderated by Steve Hull, Editor-In-Chief and Publisher of Bethesda Magazine, the panel will examine the impact of entrepreneurship on the economy and the vital role it can play in solving social inequities.  Panelists include:

7:00-7:20 PM  Fireside Chat: Building an Entrepreneurial Mindset

Following the panel discussion, Steve Hull, Editor-In-Chief and Publisher of Bethesda Magazine, will conduct a lively interview of Timothy Chi, CEO of WeddingWire, in which they will discuss how to think like an entrepreneur. The conversation will cover what skillsets are most valuable to an entrepreneur and how to build and maintain an entrepreneurial mindset.

USG + Entrepreneurship

As Montgomery County continues to evolve as an entrepreneurial hub, USG is uniquely positioned to serve as a convener and thought-leader in this arena: increasing access, awareness, and opportunities for entrepreneurs in the region. USG’s new Biomedical Sciences and Engineering Education (BSE) Facility—slated to open in 2019—will add an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hub to its existing resources for budding regional entrepreneurs. As USG considers the future of entrepreneurship in the region, we invite students, regional business executives, entrepreneurs, donors, community members, community leaders, and members of the higher education community to join us for this compelling conversation on building an entrepreneurial mindset.

 

About the Series

Beyond the Degree is a new series of conversations featuring leading voices in business and higher education, including representative leadership from across all nine universities that offer degree programs at the Universities at Shady Grove(USG). The 2017-2018 series will convene leaders working on cross-sector and cutting-edge topics, such as diversity in the workforce, the future of STEM careers, entrepreneurship, and emerging technologies. The Beyond the Degree series is open to students, regional business executives, entrepreneurs, donors, community members, community leaders, and members of the higher education community.

 

About the Universities at Shady Grove

The Universities at Shady Grove offers more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs from nine Maryland public universities on one convenient campus in Montgomery County. USG helps prepare students for rewarding careers in the region’s most high-demand fields. Students who successfully complete their coursework on the USG campus graduate with a degree from one of its nine partner universities.
