If you’ve driven on route 270 near Gaithersburg, you might have seen the construction of a strange tall building on the east side of the road. Would you have ever guessed it’s a wind tunnel? Indeed it is –Gaithersburg is getting an iFLY indoor skydiving facility! And the team responsible for opening the facility chose Launch Workplaces as their temporary home during construction and its grand opening, planned just in time for Memorial Day weekend.
iFLY lets you have the experience of free-falling out of an airplane in the safety of an indoor flight chamber. The facilities are open 365 days a year and offer individual flights, team building events, birthday parties, and STEM school field trips. Anyone aged 3 to 103 with any ability or disability can fly! Two-flight packages start at $79.95 per person. The Launch Workplaces Gaithersburg location is its first in Montgomery County; other nearby locations include Baltimore and Ashburn, VA. The parent company started in 1998 in Orlando and has 37 locations around the world – New Zealand is next after Gaithersburg.
Kathryn Eckert is iFLY Montgomery’s General Manager who just relocated to Montgomery County and has been busy in her Launch office to prepare for the opening. She began her career with iFLY in 2016 and was previously the Assistant General Manager in Ashburn and the Operations Manager in San Antonio. Kathryn studied music in college and went on to law school to earn her JD, where she gained skills in leadership and organization to help her in her position today. When asked what business books she could recommend to other managers, she displayed a recent purchase – Emotional Intelligence 2.0 by Travis Bradberry and Jean Greaves.
“Being at Launch Workplaces has been great,” Kathryn says. “It’s trendy, clean, organized, and everyone has been super nice. It’s a great location for us.” She is right – she has been able to watch the construction of the building right out of her Launch office window.
