Caroline Welles is the Executive Director of The First Ask, an organization dedicated to identifying, enlisting, and launching progressive candidates that identify as female in the State Chambers across the country.
Prior to taking on this role, Caroline worked as the Director of Surrogates at the DNC, where she served on the political team for the 2017, 2018, 2020, and 2022 election cycles. Her experience also includes working with campaigns across the country and serving the Biden administration at the Department of Interior.
We wanted to learn a bit more about Caroline. So, we asked her 11 questions about her favorite things, greatest lessons, recommendations she’d share with other professionals, and more.

What is the best lesson you’ve learned in your work?
It’s terrifying but you really can figure out anything with a little creativity and a lot of Google.

Heather Cox Richardson’s daily email. It offers a non-partisan view of the state of affairs and is so insightful.
What’s your favorite quick hack to improve focus?
Go outside for 10 minutes.
What’s the best bit of wisdom to offer to up-and-coming entrepreneurs and professionals?
Don’t get discouraged by a lot of nos—believe in yourself!
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
When you don’t know what to do, choose the answer that gives you the most options.
What’s one dish that everyone should try?
Ina Garten’s lasagna with goat cheese. You won’t regret it.
What piece of advice would you give out to people chasing their dreams?
Make room for as much mentorship and advice as possible, but at a certain point, you have to trust your own instincts.
What’s your favorite way to take a break from screen time?
Catching up with friends or my husband through going to dinner, a nice walk, or some other face-to-face activity.
What’s one thing you do for your health every day?
Snuggle with my dog. Releases all the endorphins!!
What’s your quick tip for making meetings more fun, engaging, or productive?
This isn’t fun, but I think coming in with an agenda allows you to accomplish your goals. If you don’t have enough for an agenda, then the meeting should really be an email.
How did you come to work at Launch?
After looking at several office spaces, I wanted to find a space that was comfortable, felt like a community, and had a good vibe—Launch fit the bill! Working from Launch’s Glover Park location, I’m excited about moving into a larger office to accommodate the growing team.
