What would Launch Workplaces be without out our members? Our Member Spotlight Series features two members each month, showcasing our amazing community and what makes Launch Workplaces such an inspiring place to work!
To kick off the series, we are delighted to highlight a member who has been with us from the start, Charlie Birney from Podcast Village.
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: Tell us about Podcast Village and how it came to be.
CHARLIE: Well, I had the opportunity to get an office here at Rio, and also choose where my office would be. This was last November and the place was …very quiet! I chose the closest office to the lunchroom, so I could hopefully meet everyone who was coming by, and offer to interview them for “Launch Podcast” – our flagship show. In the past year, we have really evolved and PODCAST VILLAGE now produces a number of shows for Launch and also for individuals who want their own podcast
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What are some of your interests and hobbies?
CHARLIE: You mean other than podcasting? Actually, I play mandolin in a couple of local bands, and just last Saturday, Snakehead Run played at the Pike and Rose Farmer’s Market thanks to Samad of Sustain Creativity! And I have 15-year-old twins, a boy and a girl.
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What are your passions?
CHARLIE: Definitely more passionate about the possibilities of podcasting than I was a year ago. It is such a simple, intimate way to connect with your audience.
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What is something we may not know about you?
CHARLIE: I have about 20,000 comic books in plastic bags in my basement. …Would you like some? Please??
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What brought you to Launch Workplaces?
CHARLIE: Well, I was working from home, and then also at a real estate office, but I had no place to make a phone call in private. The first thing that I wanted was the ability to close the door and make a phone call! But, now, having been here for almost a year, I really love the area, and everything around here. I just wish we had a shower!
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What is your favorite part of having an office at Launch Workplaces?
CHARLIE: That is easy, it is the people. Launch is filled with innovative, interesting people. And I can get feedback on my strange ideas.
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: Is there anything exciting happening in your business right now?
CHARLIE: Well, YES! We are in the process of moving some, not all, of our shows to iTunes…..You can find three episodes of the Jeff Miller Show on iTunes now!
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What was it like collaborating with Launch Workplaces for a podcast?
CHARLIE: Great, but to be honest, I want to do more. I just had lunch with Rao and he made a few great suggestions. My podcast partner, Jeff Davis, and I have been talking about what is next for Launch Podcast, and it will definitely be to reach out to all the other Launch Workplaces and make sure that those tenants can get a free interview/episode if they want one.
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What amenities here at Launch Workplaces do you utilize the most?
CHARLIE: Probably the coffee maker and the soda machine.
LAUNCH WORKPLACES: What’s your most memorable moment at Launch Workplaces.
CHARLIE: Definitely when I got to interview Barry Louis Polisar for my show “Charlie’s Open Mic”. I do not know if you are familiar with the movie Juno, but Barry wrote and also performed the song you hear as the movie opens. He tells the amazing and improbable story of how his song came to be in that movie…… and then, at the end, we play it together! So, that was absolutely the best. (Listen to the Podcast here)
