Congratulations are in order for Launch Workplaces Rockville member Craig Berk, whose boutique law firm The Berk Law Firm was just named to Bethesda Magazine’s Best of Bethesda list for 2020 in the Family Law Practitioner category, as announced in the January/February issue. Over 10,000 readers voted in the online poll. There were six firms mentioned in this category, and Craig is the only solo practitioner honored.
Craig specializes in business law; wills, trusts and estates; and family matters. He opened his private law practice in 2018 after working in “big law” in Washington DC for over 15 years. “The time was right for me to be on my own, and now I can provide more personal service to my clients to make their lives better,” explains Craig. Another benefit clients receive from The Berk Law Firm is more affordable rates over the large downtown firms. A basic will package for a married couple could cost less than $1000, for example.
Licensed in Maryland, Washington DC and New York, Craig enjoys working with entrepreneurs who are just getting started. He takes time to set up their business correctly. Then, they turn to Craig again and again when they need help with business contracts, compliance issues, franchise agreements, employee relations, and estate planning. Franchise owners, home contractors, and families looking to protect themselves currently make up most of his client base, which has grown through referrals and internet searches.
The Long Island native came to study law by way of working on Capitol Hill. As a political science and economics major from Syracuse University, he soon realized that an advanced degree would serve him better. He attended the University of Baltimore School of Law and went back to the Hill for several years, working as Committee Counsel for the Speakers Advisory Group on Corrections. He was wooed by the downtown corporate law firms when the realities of buying a home and starting a family became clear.
Today, after paying his dues at a big law firm, Craig loves being his own boss and having a modern, private office at Launch Workplaces. “Launch is convenient to my home and children’s schools and provides a professional place in which to meet clients. It’s a good value for me. I like the staff, space and the community,” he says.
In his spare time, Craig is a basketball coach for his two young children and a Girls on the Run coach. Squeezed in between those activities, he enjoys weekly basketball and obstacle mud runs, especially Spartan Races to bond with his friends and physically challenge himself. Craig laughs, “When the Spartan race is over, I vow I’ll never do another one, but then I sign up for the next one!”
